about

In December 2007, newly single and armed with half a bottle of whiskey inside me for courage, I booked a ten day trip to New York to meet and stay with some online friends, all sound engineers and musicians who I’d been talking to pretty much daily for three or four years. I met Evan first and kept returning to his place throughout the trip, even though I’d flooded his bathroom. He and Andrea are beautiful people. After an improv gig in a dorm room at Purchase University (the voices on ‘Crap at the Bagel Store’ are from after the show and there’s a brief clip of the gig on the 2007 Work Tape), Evan and I headed up to record with Scott in Boston on a cheap bus from China Town. Scott had a large loft he’d split into a large live room, a mastering suite and living and bedrooms for him and his flatmates, an amazing place. The first tune, ‘Tidy Little Walk’, we worked out the first couple of sections and then after that it was all noodling and seeing what came about for a few hours.

In April ’08, Scott sent the files over and I did some editing and melodica, banjo, glockenspiel, acoustic guitar, Juno and percussion overdubs in my tiny 9x10ft room in the old ice cream factory, as well as the electric guitar solo on ‘Tidy Little Walk’. My friend Natalie came over and we worked on some violin parts for ‘Red Blues’, and here you go.

Matt Rigsby Smith - Guitars, melodica, banjo and percussion
Evan Sobel - Bass guitar
Scott Craggs - Drums

with

Natalie Sedgwick - Violin on 'Red Blues'
Cab driver after Ben’s DJ set - Radio on ‘Red Blues’
Geoff Duncanson, Nate Trier, Andrea Lansing-Sobel, Joe Griffin, Benjamin Garber, Dave Brenneman - Voices on ‘Crap at the Bagel Store’

Many thanks to Joe Griffin, and Louise, as ever.
